The IP (Ingress Protection) index for LED screens indicates the degree of protection of the screen for environmental conditions.

This degree of protection tells us in which outdoor or indoor locations the LED screen can be located.

MEANING OF THE NUMBERS ON AN IP INDEX

The IP standard is based on a combination of 2 digits:

  • The first one indicates the index of protection against the entry of solid objects.
  • The second tells us the value of protection against the entry of liquids.

  • 1ST DIGIT: PROTECTION AGAINS SOLID LEAKAGE
  • 0: No protection 
  • 1: Protected against leakage of solid bodies that are bigger than 50 mm (big tools, hands…)
  • 2: Protected against leakage of Protected against leakage of solid bodies that are bigger than 12.5mm (fingers, tools…)
  • 3: Protected against leakage of solid bodies that are bigger than 2,5 mm
  • 4: Protected against leakage of solid bodies that are bigger than1 mm
  • 5: Limited protection from dust
  • 6: Total protection from dust
  • 2nd DIGIT: PROTECTION AGAINST LIQUIDS
  • 0: No protection
  • 1: Protected against totally vertical drops in the container and condenser.
  • 2: Protected against drops at 15 degrees to the vertical from the container
  • 3: Protected against raindrops at 60 degrees to the vertical from the container
  • 4: Protected against pulverized water in all directions
  • 5: Protected against projected water shoots in all directions without it affecting the device’s use.
  • 6: Protected against strong water projections at a high pressure in all directions without it affecting the device’s use.
  • 7: Protected against short periods of water immersion
  • 8: Protected against long periods of water immersions

WHAT INDEX IS THE ADEQUATE FOR INSTALLING OUTDOOR DISPLAYS?

The degrees of protection that are suitable for outdoor installation are IP65 and IP54. On the other hand, IP67 and higher degrees of protection are not recommended for continuous use in heat zones, because, as they are totally waterproof they would require forced cooling systems.
