The IP (Ingress Protection) index for LED screens indicates the degree of protection of the screen from environmental conditions.
This degree of protection tells us in which outdoor or indoor locations the LED screen can be placed.
MEANING OF THE IP INDEX NUMBERS
The IP standard is based on a combination of 2 digits:
- The first one indicates the protection against solid matter, such as dust.
- The second tells us the degree of protection against liquid leakage.
- 1ST DIGIT: PROTECTION AGAINST SOLIDS
- 0: No protection
- 1: Impermeable against solid bodies that are bigger than 50 mm (big tools, hands…)
- 2: Impermeable against solid bodies that are bigger than 12.5mm (fingers, tools…)
- 3: Impermeable against solid bodies that are bigger than 2,5 mm
- 4: Impermeable against solid bodies that are bigger than 1 mm
- 5: Limited protection from dust
- 6: Total protection from dust
- 2ND DIGIT: PROTECTION AGAINST LIQUIDS
- 0: No protection
- 1: Impermeable against totally vertical drops in the container and condenser.
- 2: Impermeable against drops at a 15 degree angle from the vertical axis.
- 3: Impermeable against raindrops at a 60 degrees angle from the vertical axis.
- 4: Impermeable against water from all directions
- 5: Impermeable against projected water shot from any direction without affecting the device’s use.
- 6: Impermeable against high pressure water from any direction without affecting the device’s use.
- 7: Protected against short periods of water immersion
- 8: Protected against long periods of water immersion
WHAT INDEX IS THE ADEQUATE FOR INSTALLING OUTDOOR DISPLAYS?
The degrees of protection that are suitable for outdoor installation are IP65 and IP54. On the other hand, IP67 and higher degrees of protection are not recommended for continuous use in high heat zones, because, as they are totally waterproof, they would require integrated cooling systems.
