SMD LED (acronym for Surface-Mount-Device, Light-Emitting-Diode) is a light-emitting diode. They are characterized by having a 3in1 encapsulation, meaning that it integrates the 3 colours (Red, Green, Blue).

Its ensemble on printed circuits is done by polarization on the front of the LED module. It is important that this process is carried out with advanced and quality machines in order to avoid future problems with LED switched off or easily removed leds from the circuit.

SMD LED STRUCTURE AND DESIGN

The SMD LEDs are rectangular in shape and consist of three cells. These cells contain a light element (semiconductor crystal) that produces light when induced by a direct current.

To protect the SMD cells, led resins are used that completely cover the upper part. These resins for SMD are available in various colours and shades.

Depending on the number of cells in the SMD led, it will have a certain number of contacts for welding. One of them is always the anode (+) and the other will be the cathode (-). In the case of an SMD RGB LED it usually has a cathode contact and another anode for each light element. Depending on the manufacturer and the LED specification, the configuration and number of connection points can vary.

SMD LED SIZES

Depending on their size, the types of LEDs are classified with a 4-digit number: the first 2 digits for the length and the next 2 for the LED height in tenths of a millimeter. For example, a l5050 iled ndicates a size of 5x5mm. In the following table we can see the most used types of SMD LED:
